Hi and happy Feel-Good Monday!
This is where we share our favorite tips, tricks, secrets, and ways to "think like a healthy person" so that you can find your own delicious path to healthy living.
"Feel-Good Mondays" are meant to help us get back into that place of feeling energized, nourished, and ready to take inspired action for the week ahead.
I started eating better and pursuing a cleaner lifestyle way back in my 20's, but here's a total confession: I didn't do it to be "healthier."
At 20, I didn't suffer from poor energy. I didn't have aches and pains, or digestive issues, or headaches, or a disease I was trying to heal from.
Nope. I started eating better foods because I simply wanted to look better. Plain and simple. Yes, vanity was my driving force. I mean, come on! I needed to look good for dates back then ;).
In my twenties, I was about 25 lbs heavier than I am now. I had already lost a good 20 pounds through what I refer to as my years of "torturous dieting," and had just grown so freaking tired of gaining/losing the same 5 lbs that I decided that there had to be a better way.
And that, my friends, was my motivation to a healthier lifestyle: To look better in jeans. To feel more comfortable in a bathing suit. To not fear spandex workout pants.
As I gave up "dieting" and began to discover a way of eating that felt balanced, natural, sustainable and — YES! ENJOYABLE! – the weight started coming off. And staying off.
As I tuned into what my body truly needed, and deconstructed cravings, and developed a new mindset around eating (one that didn't use food to "numb me out" anymore, or to fill the empty spaces in my life, or as a punishment/reward system), I got physically smaller. And I loved that.
But something unexpected happened, too. I didn't start off eating in a cleaner way to "feel" better, but that's exactly what happened.
My brain fog lifted (I didn't even realize I had brain fog until one day, I could just think so much more clearly than ever before).
My mood became so much more balanced (yes, I admit it: I was annoyingly moody before changing my diet…as friends and family will happily confirm for you…).
My skin started glowing. Like, really glowing.
I was so much more engaged in the world than I ever was before. When I stopped obsessing over and analyzing every calorie and measurement of my food, I had so much more space and time in my life to focus on the things that really mattered. To focus on the things that brought me joy, fun, passion, and fulfillment into my life.
So I tell you this: Yes, it's OK to be vain. It's perfectly fine (great, even!!) to use your desire to simply look hot in a pair of jeans to get you to take that first step towards taking better care of yourself.
And yes, as you take better care of yourself, and nourish yourself, and feed yourself what you most need, you will absolutely – without a doubt – begin to lose weight. And that's going to feel amazing.
But I can also guarantee some unexpected "side effects" that are pretty amazing "free bonuses" that you'll be really into, too: More energy. Less fatigue. Better focus and concentration. No brain fog. Awesome digestion. Improved stamina. Glowing skin. More engagement in the world and the ability to truly maximize your potential.
Pretty cool how that works ;).
