"Feel-Good Mondays" are meant to help us get back into that place of feeling energized, nourished, and ready to take inspired action for the week ahead.
I'm about to say something controversial, so prepare yourself: I hardly ever wear sunscreen. (GASP!!)
It's not the usual thing you hear a health expert proclaim, right?? But let me explain.
I love summer. I love the sun. I love going on hot, tropical vacations. And being as I hardly ever wear sunscreen, you'd think I'd be a tanned, withered mess by now. But I'm actually pretty pale and – I like to think – relatively un-wrinkly.
So today's post is all about (the relatively un-talked about topic of) how to protect yourself from the sun through the foods you eat.
Now, before we go any further, let me give some disclaimers:
- I wear a hat and protective clothing when I know I'm going to be in the sun for a long period of time. I'm not out there with a sun-death-wish! I recommend you do the same.
- I am not actually against using sunscreen (as long as they're natural, clean sunscreens) if you know you're going to be in the strong sun for a while. But unfortunately for me, even natural sunscreens that I often recommend to clients (ones that use minerals like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as natural sun blockers) cause irritation on my very sensitive skin if worn daily. So I don't have the same option as most people do.
That means I am "forced" to protect my skin through clothing, hats, and my daily diet.
Are you surprised to know that what you eat can actually help protect you from sunburn? I was, too. Years ago, when my diet was not nearly as clean as it is today, I regularly got sunburns and sun rashes. As I cleaned up my diet and reduced inflammatory foods, my skin became so much more resilient and radiant.
You might also be surprised to know that, unfortunately, the opposite is also true: A diet filled with sugar and processed foods actually makes you more sensitive to the sun.
We don't talk about this much in our culture. But I believe that one of the most important factors in protecting your skin is what you put INSIDE your body. Yup.
In the video, Cecilia and I talk about using natural, antioxidant-rich, anti-inflammatory foods to get the glow and protect the skin.
